Maldon Tigers drew three games, their first match against Upminster-A which Maldon held their own and kept possession of the ball with some good passing between Douglas, Tyler and Ozzy. Defending such a big pitch though at times proved tricky, enabling Upminster to get through Maldon’s defence. Score: Upminster-A 3 : 2 Maldon (Tyler x2).

The following games against Barking & Brentwood were hard matches. Having played Barking recently, Maldon played well and were passing the ball more positively. Tyler twice managed to ‘fly’ down the wing & score. Rhys also gave a terrific run to score the third – Rhys’ first for Maldon! Score: Barking 6 : 3 Maldon (Tyler x2 & Rhys x1)

Maldon tried hard to stop Brentwood from scoring with great tagging but Brentwood proved the better side, stopping Maldon from scoring. Score: Brentwood-A 3 : 0 Maldon

Maldon Lions first played Brentwood-B and displayed what a good Team Maldon are becoming, with excellent tagging and individual attacking skills. Score: Brentwood-B 2 : 5 Maldon (Charlie x3, Pippa & Ieuan)

Second match against Chelmsford proved tougher. Pippa took Maldon into the lead with another fast run to the line. An excellent display of tagging from the whole Team, kept Chelmsford from advancing. Ieuan forced his way through Chelmsford’s defence to score and William also battled his way forward for the third try. Pippa brought a very confident Maldon U7’s home with their 4th try – a great game of tag-rugby to watch! Score: Chelmsford 2 : 4 Maldon (Pippa x2, Ieuan & William)

Through to the Semi’s, Maldon faced Brentwood-A. Maldon tried their hardest to break Brentwood’s defence, but just couldn’t get through to score – albeit, Pippa did manage to manoeuvre her way to the try line. Both Teams displayed good tag-rugby match skills. Score: Brentwood-A 4 : 1 Maldon (Pippa)

Maldon U7’s Teams displayed GREAT Tag-Rugby and were a credit to Maldon RFU Club! A big Thank You to all Parents who supported both Teams throughout the long! But enjoyable day! NB:

Thanks to Matt for supplying the shelter Tent !
U12's Braintree Festival - 20th April 2008 - Maldon retain their title!

Maldon U12’s followed up their recent good form at the Essex Festival and Barking Festival by retaining the title that they won last year as U11’s. On arrival we discovered that one team (Bury St Edmunds) had dropped out leaving us in a league of 3 with Harlow and Eton Manor. First up was Harlow. Although they did their best Harlow were completely outclassed with our forwards totally dominating the game, winning every scrum including theirs. Half time saw us take a 15-0 lead. This was built on in the second half to finish 35-0. Previous experience told us it was important to score as many tries as possible in case of draws. Eton Manor then beat Harlow 25-0. Win or draw and we would top our league. However, Eton Manor has a very strong team and we had already been easily beaten by them this season. 14 minutes later nothing separated the 2 teams and it was a 0-0 draw. Somehow the referee had only given us 5 tries against Harlow and the league was decided on the toss of a coin. Well done Tom Burton – justice was done!

The Semi-final was against Thurrock who we had narrowly beaten in the Plate semis at the Essex Festival. This time it was clearer and after a try less first half, we ran in 3 tries to win 15-0

The Final pitched us against Eton Manor again. Both teams went close to scoring and John Rose made a spectacular tackle, ripping the ball from an Eton Manor forward as he dived to score and saving what looked like a certain try. Again the match ended as a 0-0 draw and the tournament referee announced that the Cup would be shared. 10 tries scored and none conceded. An excellent performance by everyone.

U10's Braintree Festival - 20th April 2008 - Maldon WIN!!!

Maldon under 10s continued their successful season by winning the Braintree festival, scoring a total of 20 tries and only conceding 3 tries. First Maldon needed to win their group to reach the final. To warm up the squad used the apparatus on the nearby playground, the parents were occupied with the intricacies of constructing the new tent whilst other teams ran through drill after drill after drill. The team started superbly by beating Westcliff 15-0, in one of their best performances of the year. Particularly pleasing was the improvement the team showed in moving the ball away from the bigger Westcliff pack. The next game against Thurrock unfortunately did not go as planned and Maldon failed to tackle the huge Thurrock prop, and did not employ the tactics agreed before the game, which meant that Maldon did not have enough possession to dominate the game. A better performance in the second half allowed Maldon to scrape a win, with a try in the last seconds of the game, 15-10. But, it was pointed out that Maldon needed to improve if they wished to win any more games. The next match against Eton Manor indicated that Maldon had listened to this advice and they were unstoppable, scoring 7 tries to win 35-0, with Eton Manor hardly touching the ball. The final game against Bury St.Edmunds would decide who won the group as Bury St.Edmunds were also unbeaten. Maldon began the game ferociously, at last dominating rucks and mauls and attempting to move the ball wide to their speedy backs when possible. However, Bury St.Edmunds demonstrated that they were the best defensive team Maldon had faced this year, putting in some fantastic tackles. In the face of such strong tackling Maldon did well to retain the ball in contact and linked well on 2 occasions to score tries in the first half. In the second half Maldon managed to cross the line once more to win 15-0, which saw them win their group with 4 wins out of 4 games.

The final was against Upminster, undefeated from the other group, and the team who beat Maldon in the Essex cup final 5 weeks ago. Maldon knew they had to keep the ball away from the big Upminster pack, and were able to play an open game by rucking quickly and passing the ball out to the backs who were able to run the ball with time and space. Although Upminster managed one try Maldon won 20-5 to secure the title of tournament champions. Next week is the Chelmsford festival, which the team will be determined to win to finish off their season in style.

With two teams representing Maldon RFU we looked forward to a good days rugby!

Maldon Lions were up against Harrow A in their first match, a tough even match but Maldon managed to hold their defence (tagging was excellent) and won 7:6. Maldon Tigers however came up against Blackheath A in their first round, and considering most of Maldon Tigers hadn't experienced playing in a Festival before, found it tough as their first match but did manage to score which kept spirits up! Result: 6:2 to Blackheath A.

Second match took Maldon Lions through beating Sidcup 4:3 - again some terrific defence and good passing of the ball. Maldon Tigers, with only a short break (which was possibly to their advantage - now more aware of what was expected of them), then challenged Blackheath B to which the game was more even in ability. Some great runs down the side line and better passing behind finished the game in a 3:3 Draw, which boosted Maldon Tigers.

A final match for Maldon Tigers was to play Barking. A good side Barking, meant Maldon Tigers had to work hard at defence and better passing from Maldon gave them two tries. Score: 6:2 to Barking.

Maldon Lions were then to play Barking in the Cup Final. Maldon were a bit slow off the mark and found themselves quickly 0:2 down. With a boost of encouragement from "very enthusiastic supporters"!! (as 'told off' by the Ref in a previous match!), Maldon switched back On and clawed their way back with a very impressive side line run from Max Carter who put Maldon back in the match at 4:4. Maldon's defence was fantastic! and kept Barking from scoring. A lucky break for Maldon (drop ball) put Maldon ahead and another terrific side-stepping run from Max saw Maldon U7's Win the Barking Festival 7:5. Credit too must go to Paul Cox (Coach) who has worked with the Maldon Lions - well done Paul!

A thoroughly enjoyable days tag-rugby was had by all - Great enthusiasm and encouragement from Parents, which (as always) boosted both Teams.

U10's Essex Cup Touranment - 16th March 2008

On a cold, wet and windy day Maldon travelled to Westcliff to defend the Essex Cup, which they had won for the past 3 seasons. Braintree, Burnham and South Woodham Ferrers were in the same pool as Maldon, and only the top team from this pool would reach the semi-finals. Maldon started slowly, managing to beat South Woodham Ferrers 10-5 in a very scrappy game full of errors by both team. Maldon did well to win, but lost one player to injury after only 2 minutes to reduce the size of their squad. Against Burnham Maldon displayed better form, and scored 3 tries in the first half to secure a bonus point. Their defence improved and they managed to stop Burnham from scoring at all, final score 15-0. The final game against Braintree was the deciding game within the pool, and Maldon put in their best defensive performance to keep Braintree out, winning 10-0.

After topping their group Maldon faced Romford, who won their own pool, in the semi-final. With weather conditions worsening the players sheltered in the clubhouse before the semi-final. When taking the field for the game it was obvious that Romford had a much bigger team than Maldon, and Maldon were playing into a very strong wind first half.. However, despite losing three players to injury during the game Maldon managed to cross the try line in the first half, to go into half-time 5-0 ahead. Although Romford managed to score one try themselves, Maldon players displayed their best ever defensive performance, with some ferocious tackling often on players much bigger than themselves. The final score was 5-5, but Maldon won by virtue of scoring first.

The final was against Upminster, another physically big side. By now Maldon were down to 11 fit players. The size of the opposition meant that Maldon struggled to win the ball, which resulted in Upminster scoring two tries to win the game 0-10. When Maldon had the ball they tried hard but could not manage to get past the Upminster defence. Again Maldon tackled superbly, but the efforts of the previous 4 games had exhausted the players, and losing 4 players to injury meant that some players had to play in every game.

Maldon have further tournaments at Barking, Braintree and Chelmsford and can look forward to these tournaments with confidence.

U7's Essex Cup Festival - 9th March 2008

A fantastic day's rugby was played by our Under 7's Team:

    Pippa Garbutt
    Joseph Lane
    Oliver Anthony
    Liam Cox
    Jack Thompson
    Charlie Knight
    Ieuan Thomas
    Max Carter
    Owen Pretty
With tough matches to play, Maldon had a good start and won their first match. However, differing decisions on their second match meant they were down on points going through to their third match of which they didn't win. However, not all was lost, as the team went through to "The Vase" play off, and had a successful result.
Great enthusiasm kept the team going through the day - with exceptional play from Ieuan Thomas.
As in all these Festivals, a good day was had due to the help and encouragement from Parents, family & friends - the weather was kind too!

St Francis Catholic Primary School and CryoService Score a Try!

The Background
Dave Scott, at youth club coach at Maldon Rugby club and one of the CSO’s at CryoService has recently had the opportunity to put his passion and knowledge for rugby back in to the community. Dave has always had a great enthusiasm for rugby and after playing the sport for years decided to share his passion for the sport by completing a tag rugby coaching course, going on to obtaining a Level One Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union. Dave was then approached by Catherine Rickwood – one of his son’s teachers from St Francis Catholic Primary School in Maldon and asked if he would be interested in coaching her 9-10 year olds.

The Commitment
Trevor Lyes, Dave’s boss, agreed to provide some flexibility in his shift pattern so that he could carry out his first coaching session at St Francis, the first taking place on 31st October 2007. Since then comments such as ‘Mr Scott’s rugby sessions rule!’ and ‘the best thing about it is taking part and playing. I never used to like rugby but by playing it I now love it!’ have been made.

The Future
The intention is for Dave to continue these sessions for the remainder of the 2007 / 2008 season and extend the training so that all 7-11 year olds in the school can take part. He commented ‘the physical side of rugby is in keeping with the current healthy living lifestyle being promoted in schools and the press. It encourages children to work together as a team and endorses good sportsmanship whilst improving physical fitness and social skills.’
